Recycling has returned to Jackson.

Keep Jackson Beautiful has partnered with Replenysh, EnvironMentality to implement a recycling program in the city. The idea was sparked by the water crisis that resulted in the disposal of an influx of plastic water bottles.

Keep Jackson Beautiful executive director Keelan Sanders said there are a number of different harmful side effects that could result from disposing of the influx of water bottles that are the result of the city's water emergency.

"A plastic bottle doesn't break down or degrade. Therefore, if it goes to the landfill, it will stay there for hundreds of years. Not only will it cause problems for the environment, if some landfills decide to burn the trash, then you'll begin to have problems with the ozone layer," Sanders said last month.

The city of Jackson suspended the curbside recycling collection program in August 2019, saying the "market demand for recycled materials" had diminished drastically.

The recycling locations include the following:

Replenysh is partnering with EnvironMentality from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at 605 S. Gallatin Street for a buy-back day. Aluminum cans will be bought back for 50 cents a pound and PET #1 water/soda bottles will be bought back for 10 cents a pound. The effort is to raise awareness of Keep Jackson Beautiful's citywide recycling program.

“While Replenysh was initially focused solely on the plastic bottles, the distribution sites also turned their attention to recycling the cardboard and shrink packaging related to bottle distribution”, said founder Mark Armen.
